The front door most families never find

Every California county has an Area Agency on Aging.

They are public, they are free, they are not selling anything, and helping you work this out is literally their job. Most families have never heard of them.

California is divided into Planning and Service Areas. Every one of the 58 counties sits inside exactly one of them, and each area has an agency responsible for aging services there. That is 33 agencies covering the entire state, which is why this page can be complete rather than partial.

What they actually do varies by county, but it usually includes meals, transport help, caregiver support and respite, benefits counselling, insurance counselling, help staying in the home, and the Long Term Care Ombudsman. Most importantly, they know which local programmes are currently running, which is the thing that is hardest to find out from outside.

An Area Agency on Aging is very often how you actually claim a government programme. The entitlement tells you what you may be owed. The agency is who helps you apply for it. That is the sentence that connects the two halves of what we show you, and it is the reason this page exists rather than sitting behind the check.

If you only do one thing

Find your county below and call the number next to it. Say what is happening in plain words. You do not need to know what to ask for, and you do not need to have any paperwork ready.

It is free, and there is nothing to sign up for.

Where these numbers come from

All 33 agencies were read directly from the California Department of Aging's own contact endpoint, and the per-county Information and Assistance lines from the department's county directory. Both were verified on 28 July 2026.

Those two official sources publish different numbers for several counties. Where they differ we show the county Information and Assistance line, because that is the number the state tells families to call, rather than the agency switchboard.

Los Angeles County appears under two agencies. That is correct and not a duplicate: the county department and the City of Los Angeles department are both real, both in the official listing, and which one is right depends on whether the household is inside the city.
