Food help, and which problem each kind solves
Food is the most commonly needed category and the one where families most often reach for the wrong door, because four quite different things get called the same thing.
Related: what help exists, are they taking new clients, and the definition this all sits under.
Establish which problem it is first
Not enough food is a symptom with at least four causes, and each has a different door:
- Cannot afford it. Points at federal benefits and pantries.
- Cannot get to it. A transport problem wearing a food problem's clothes.
- Cannot prepare it. Points at prepared meals, not groceries.
- Not eating. Appetite loss with no obvious cause is a medical question first and no program on this page answers it.
The categories
Food pantries. Groceries, usually free, frequently run by faith organisations or a regional food bank's partner network. Availability varies week to week with donations, and hours are often narrow. Many will arrange delivery for somebody housebound if asked directly, and almost none advertise it.
Home-delivered meals. Prepared meals brought to the door, typically arranged through the Area Agency on Aging. Waiting lists are common. The daily contact from the person delivering is, for many households, worth as much as the food.
Congregate meals. A meal served at a senior centre or community site. Cheaper to run than delivery and it answers eating alone, which delivery does not. Consistently underused.
Federal food benefits. SNAP, and separately a commodity program and a seasonal produce program for older adults in many areas. Older adults claim these at a lower rate than any other eligible group, largely because they assume they earn too much and because the application is unpleasant. Several states run simplified applications for older households.
What families get wrong
Treating a pantry as a last resort. Pantries are used by working households constantly and nobody is checked for worthiness at the door.
Buying a commercial meal subscription from another state. Understandable at two in the morning, and it costs several times the local option, provides no welfare check and does nothing about isolation. A reasonable bridge for a fortnight, an expensive permanent answer.
Solving the food and ignoring the reason. If the cause is transport or an unsafe kitchen, delivered food manages the symptom while the cause continues.
What we cannot tell you
Whether a household qualifies for a federal food benefit, or what a specific pantry has this week. Eligibility is a state question and pantry stock is a weekly one. We record what is open, to whom, and the date we checked, and where we do not know we say we do not know.
